About Foundations Learning Center
Foundations Learning Center is committed to providing specialized, one-on-one literacy tutoring that will inspire and motivate students. My focus on Evidence-Based Literacy Instruction (EBLI) ensures that every student builds the essential literacy skills needed for lifelong learning. I am not only a tutor, but also a partner in your learner's educational journey, working to foster a love for learning and academic success.
I offer private literacy tutoring for kindergarteners, elementary-aged students, middle schoolers, high schoolers, and beyond. For most effective results, sessions are conducted in-person for 55 minutes per session. Students generally attend sessions twice per week. I offer sessions throughout the school year and during the summer.
What is EBLI?
EBLI is a Structured Linguistic Literacy (aka "Speech to Print") approach to teaching the five essential components of reading: phonemic awareness, phonics, fluency, vocabulary, and comprehension, along with handwriting, spelling, and writing mechanics. Instruction is highly structured, sequential, and uses an interleaving approach that lends itself to faster results, helping struggling readers make up for lost time as quickly as possible. Meet Shannon
I have always had a love of teaching, but my passion for literacy came from my experience as a parent with struggling readers of my own. I am the mother to four daughters: one who taught herself to read by the age of four, one who followed a fairly typical path to learning to read, and two others who really struggled and were eventually diagnosed with dyslexia. Their struggles sent me on a learning journey of my own and took me from my job as an early childhood educator to becoming a literacy specialist and private tutor.
My qualifications and certifications include:
- Bachelor's degree in Child Development
- Master's degree in Education
- Formerly licensed K-3 teacher
- Owner of a private PreK school for 25 years
- Barton-trained Reading Tutor
- Reading Simplified Master Trained
- Certified EBLI Instructor
